Development is a multi-dimensional term, reflecting political, social, economic and cultural realities of the globe, while it also suggests a normative trend that has the term underdeveloped at its one end and developed at its other. After the Communist regimes were over, the CEE-region was for quite a long time termed as a cluster of developing countries that needed to catch up with the “West” to reach all the amenities that capitalism can provide.

Then years passed and what we see today, besides the unquestionable benefits of the new system (ever more strengthening civil sector that demands accountability from the governments, freedom of press, freedom of expression, etc), is privatization of social services, growing inequalities, weakening local industries, struggling small-scale farmers, old reflexes of governance and press work, lack of social bonds and values reflecting the remnants of the old regime. Many of these characteristics are not unique to this region but are to be shared with several ‘Southern’ countries, too and thus provide some common-grounds for closer cooperations in the field of development.

On this site we scrutinise the very word development, examining the stages and types of the numerous apprehensions of developments, put into the special context of the CEE-region and aiming to explore parallels between the CEE-region and the ‘South’. Our approach is critical and claims to question the legitimacy of a development that solely leans on GDP-indicators and the overall drive of profit-maximalisation. We promote looking behind these indicators to see social injustices, environmental degradation, growing inequalities that contribute to intensifying ethnical, social, religious clashes, migration and ever increasing poverty all around the world.

We are promoting a development that aims to achieve a sustainable, just and fair world where basic human needs are provided for all and where hunger and excessive poverty no longer exist. The globalized world we would like to see respects human rights and maintains the participation of everyday people in decision-making. It rediscovers the value of local contexts and redifines the role of uncontrollable transnational institutions and companies, aiming at an equal and just world where not only the possibility but also the means are given to all to reach quality lives.

Our goal is to analyse the negative impacts of globalization through a sectoral approach mainly in the region and in the ‘South’, and to develop new alternatives and work for their implementations. Given the complexity of such a goal, the site provides a platform for all development NGOs to contribute with their findings and it also hopes to assist regional, transnational cooperations to strengthen the development work in the CEE-region.
